Activities to develop motor skills

Motor skills are movements and actions of the muscles. Typically, they are categorized into two groups: gross motor skills and fine motor skills. Gross motor skills are involved in movement and coordination of the arms, legs, and other large body parts and movements. They participate in actions such as running, crawling, swimming, etc. Fine motor skills are involved in smaller movements that occur in the wrists, hands, fingers, and the feet and toes. They participate in smaller actions such as picking up objects between the thumb and finger, writing carefully, and even blinking. These two motor skills work together to provide coordination.

At the Indian Academy, Sharjah we provide ample opportunities to the little ones to develop and enhance their fine and gross motor skills through activities in the classroom, in the Rumpus room as well as in the outdoor play area. These activities not only enhance their motor skills but also give them ample opportunities to interact with their peers and develop social and communication skills.  They learn to care, share and wait for their turn.  They get an opportunity to learn through exploration and experience.  They are also able to express their creativity and artistic skills through the various activities designed for them.

Outdoor activities like climbing, crawling, jumping hurdles, walking on various patterns, swinging, going down a slide, running, hopping help enhance their gross motor skills.

Sand and water play as well as the sensory wall help them feel textures and improve their fine motor skills. Further, their fine motor skills are also developed through various activities like free and focus scribbling, doodling, paper tearing, pasting, colouring, printing etc.
